Tired of all that clutter in your garage? Perhaps you have so much clutter that you don't even have room to park your car in your garage, and you want to reclaim that space once and for all. Often times, people put off the project of cleaning out and organising their garages because they assume it'll be too time-consuming. However, with the right game plan and a bit of ambition, you can complete this project over the course of a weekend.
Utilise Vertical Space
Start by assessing the vertical space that's available to you. The more storage you can build into your existing garage walls (and even ceilings!), the more floor space you'll save and the smaller the footprint your stuff will take up. If you have large portions of wall space that aren't currently being used for anything, start brainstorming how you could convert it into usable storage. This can be achieved with wall racking systems from the hardware store, shelving or simple hooks.
Stock Up on Storage Supplies
Next, it's time to do a little shopping for the right storage supplies to suit your garage space. Organisation and storage bins are a great starting place, as these can be easily stacked for vertical storage and don't require any special mounting to the walls of your garage. You can also find them in "air-tight" options, which is ideal for keeping any unwanted critters out. If you have lawn accessories (such as shovels and rakes) taking up space in your garage, you may also want to consider buying a vertical storage mount to hold these items and keep them in a convenient spot.
Separate Items Into Piles
More than likely, you have some junk in your garage that you could stand to part with. After all, for many people, a garage becomes a sort of catch-all dumping ground for things you don't want to keep in the house and have no immediate use for, but don't want to part with just yet. You'll spend a good portion of your weekend, then, sorting through these items and placing them into one of the several piles, including:
- a "keep" pile for things that will stay in the garage
- a "donate" pile for things you no longer need but others may find useful
- a "sell" pile for items you could sell
- a "trash" pile for things that need to be thrown away
At the end of your weekend, consider holding a garage sale in an effort to get rid of some of those items in your "sell" pile. Anything you don't sell can then be moved to the "donate" pile. The money you make from your garage sale can be used to offset some of the costs of buying storage solutions for your garage. And if you're lucky, you'll have a bit leftover as well!
